Fencing with the French Épée

1. Class Focus - body positions, delivering attacks to advantageous and less advantageous targets.

  • Learned Positions

    • 1st Position - En Guarde (High Guarde & Low Guarde)

    • 2nd Position - Lunge (Long Step Attack),

  • Learned Techniques; Thrust, Recover (from Thrust), Lunge, Recover (from Lunge).

  • Partner Drills; attacking various targets. Discuss what targets are easy, and what targets are difficult. The Defender can make subtle blade motions to attempt a double hit, but cannot extend or lunge with their attack.

  • (Start class with 5 minutes of Foot drills, new students can observe experienced students)

2. Class Focus - Constraining the Opponent through position

  • Partner Drills; assuming positions that limit target area, identifying when target area is constrained, and acting accordingly. Discuss what happens when a fencer is constrained, or trapped. (break the trap or spring the trap)

  • (Start class with 5 minutes of Foot drills, new students can observe experienced students)

3. Class Focus - Defending the Quadrants with Parries (4678) from attacks at various targets

  • Learned Techniques; Parries 4,6,7,8. And how they should be adapted to fit multiple target attacks.

  • Partner Drills; various attacks with parries and repost, (onion drill for complexity)

  • (Start class with 5 minutes of Foot drills, new students should participate as well.)

4. Class Focus - Etiquette for Strip Fencing

  • Speed rounds with instruction and coaching

  • (Start class with 7 minutes of Foot drills, new students should participate as well.)

5. Class Focus - Revisiting Parries,

  • Partner Drills: Quadrant attacks and P-Rs, with movement forward and back, prescribed attacks, then free attacking,

  • (Start class with 7 minutes of Foot drills, new students should participate as well.)

6. Class Focus - Refereeing:

  • Speed rounds with fencers refereeing.

  • (Start class with 7 minutes of Foot drills, new students should participate as well.)

7. Class Focus - mock Pool Matches

  • How pool matches work

  • 5 point matches with fencers helping the referee

  • (Start class with 7 minutes of Foot drills, new students should participate as well.)

8. Class Focus - Fight Cards / mock Chivalry cup

  • Learned Techniques;

  • (Start class with 7 minutes of Foot drills, new students should participate as well.)
