Who we are
Classical fencing, often referred to as traditional or historical fencing, is rooted in the techniques and philosophies established in the European martial arts of the past. This discipline prioritizes precision, control, and strategy, emphasizing the importance of both physical and mental training. The key weapons in classical fencing include the foil, épée, and sabre, each requiring distinct techniques and approaches.
The foil, characterized by its light weight and flexible blade, is primarily used for thrusting attacks and is governed by specific rules of priority, or right-of-way. This enables fencers to engage in tactical exchanges where strategy is paramount.
The épée, on the other hand, is a heavier weapon that allows for full-points scoring on the entire body. The absence of right-of-way rules encourages a more aggressive style, testing the agility and reflexes of the fencer.
Sabre fencing is distinct due to its emphasis on slashing attacks, combined with thrusting. With its fast-paced nature, sabre requires quick decision-making and dynamic footwork, making it a favored discipline for those drawn to action-oriented fencing.
Classical fencing not only cultivates physical abilities such as coordination and endurance but also instills values of discipline, respect, and sportsmanship. At Tri Blade Fencing Academy, we strive to honor this rich heritage through comprehensive training that develops both technical skills and a deep appreciation for the sport’s history and philosophy. Through our programs, students are encouraged to explore the art of classical fencing and to embody the principles that have sustained this discipline through the ages.
